These sticky messages can be read as often as necessary and unlike other messages, will not be bumped down the list as new threads come in. This ensures that the information does not have to be repeated over and over. Only moderators or administrators with access to forum tools can decide what messages will be sticky.

With online learning, communication is a key element to success. Discussion boards provide a venue for students and teachers to communicate back and forth about course objectives, grades or specific aspects of a subject. It can also be used as a general gathering place for creating a sense of rapport. It invites student participation and fosters a sense of belonging. Once a thread is created under a certain heading, students have the opportunity to reply to each other at any time. This type of forum is a handy tool that can be accessed by students in any time zone. Most forums have a feature that alerts members by email every time a new message is posted.

With distance learning and online schools, it is important to look for a program that offers good communication features such as discussion boards. While some boards offer many fun extras such as emoticons, avatars or signature blocks, these are not always necessary for good communication. The main objective is to be able to gain access to information and converse in an open manner. While some programs offer things such as chat or instant messaging, a forum does not require users to be online all at the same time. This makes it a great option for students in varying time zones.
