Breaking Traditions With Educational Technology

If one were to combine various technologies with a set of courses or curriculum in order to enhance learning and instruction, that person would end up with what is called educational technology. While collaboration plays a large part of the educational process, when technology comes into play collaboration comes in the form of smartboards, discussion boards, blogs and many other features. These things have thoroughly enhanced online education allowing it to become the popular choice for many working adults. Many feel that the independent and self guided learning promoted by such technology empowers learners in a way never seen before now. It is no wonder that so many have opted for this type of high tech learning over the traditional.

While many teachers in a conventional setting must lay out a curriculum and gauge where each student is at in skill level, the use of educational technology in an online venue can allow students to take assessment tests giving results that are not only precise but unbiased. If necessary, students can move up or down in difficulty levels and access their assignments at their own pace. Parts of coursework that prove difficult or challenging can be repeated over and over until the student fully understands the material without consequence. Extra features allow this progress to be monitored and recorded over the semester.

While many educational technologies encourage independence they also foster collaboration. The fact that they can do this in spite of vast distances is one of the great aspects of online learning. Students can take part in class discussions using chat options or discussion boards. While chat requires that students be online all at once, discussion boards do not. In either option, the exchange of ideas can help students gain a sense of belonging and inspire participation. This can lead to an even better understanding of the subject matter. Email and instant messaging are also commonly used and allow for more one on one interaction, as might happen between a student and instructor.

The cost effectiveness of education technology plays a primary role in making the choice between an onsite and online campus for many prospective students. While the use of an online education is flexible and convenient, many of the costs associated with onsite campuses do not exist and are therefore not passed down to the student. As compared to conventional pen and paper classroom materials, a reusable standardized computer software program also means lower tuition costs. While traditional printed materials can quickly become outdated, computer programs are easily updated when necessary. This allows coursework to stay current. With online learning, educational technology allows students to rest on the knowledge that they are being educated with the latest concepts.
